As spring elaborates upon itself through April, we are watching for the next round of wildflowers to appear. These little orchids (Calypso bulbosa) are called fairy slippers or calypsos. They prefer sun dappled woodlands and are very shy. We have searched out their haunts in our woods and check annually to be sure they are still with us. This year I was afraid we were going to have a scarce showing because I found two old faded ones in an area that usually has many. Apparently they were scouts, because about two weeks later several new fresh ones had sprung up around them. Calypso spotting is like hunting for Easter eggs...a search for the bounty of spring.
