I've been making some progress on my butterfly runner. It took about a week to mordant a couple of blanks (back-up!) and allow the mordant time to cure a little. Painting with dyes is a little dicier than immersion dyeing in terms of "bite" and fade resistance, so I do what I can to encourage.the process. Once the fabric was ready I transferred the plan and ironed down the butterfly shapes I had cut out of freezer paper while I was waiting. They act as a resist for the next step....silk screening my circle pattern in thickened myrobalan. That went about as well as my usual silk screen attempts...about 60% successful. After that I painted over all very messily with weld (yellow) and log gray. I should have thickened those colors too, but I didn't so they spread. Once they had a chance to set I steamed the cloth in the microwave, again to encourage dye longevity. At this point I have white spaces on which to wax my butterfly details against a patchwork of gray and yellow, which will become blue and green in the end....I think.
So, the next step is wax.
