I still have lots of work left before Lynne's table reflects all four seasons, but the design work is done. My thoughts are now turning to the next phase of the project...Becky's table. My friend Becky entertains frequently and the dishes she likes to use are much more casual than Lynne's. They are made by Arabia of Finland...this pattern is called Karelia. It has soft edged brown and black concentric rings on the rims as its only ornament. The base color is not white but very light gray so white linens make the dishes look dingy. I am going to use natural linen as the neutral from which I work. The thin "white" band between the rings actually has a very faint green shadow to it so green things go with these dishes very well. The task I have set for myself again is to use them to make tables reflecting each of the seasons. Their rough simplicity will complement the textile techniques I like to use, but the somber palette feels a little restrictive for spring and summer tables. Here we go....
